Finding a registered nurse job

Registered nursing is the largest healthcare occupation in the United States, and demand has stayed high for decades.

Where RNs work

Hospitals remain the most common destination, and for good reason: pay is strong and openings are plentiful enough that new graduates can often start soon after licensure. Clinics and physician offices are harder to get into but tend to offer shorter shifts and steadier hours, which is why many nurses move that direction later in their careers.

Beyond those, RNs work in surgical centres, home health, hospice, school districts, occupational health, case management, research and insurance review. The credential travels further than most people expect.

Starting out

If you are still in a nursing program, this is the time to be watching for openings. Many students apply for internships or residency programmes toward the end of school, and hospitals frequently hire their own interns into permanent roles. Others go straight into practice. Both routes work — it depends on the setting you want and how much structured support you want in your first year.

What belongs on an RN resume

This is where most nursing resumes fall down. Recruiters cannot infer the weight of your role from your title alone. Put the numbers on the page: patients per shift, unit specialty, facility size and bed count, acuity, and the certifications you hold.

Nurses also routinely leave out the managerial work now expected of the role — charge shifts, preceptoring, committee work, protocol development. Those are exactly the details that separate two otherwise similar candidates.

Getting the resume right

Whatever part of nursing you are in, the resume has to say more than your title. Our certified nursing resume writers do this every day — see our nursing resume service, or call 1-800-482-1303.
